As is the case with saltwater, target fishing species will change with the seasons. Here our year-round target species is redfish, and changing seasons bring in a variety of sea trout, black drum, sheepshead, plentiful flounder, and tarpon. Warmer water means more activity, but here in the Texas flats, redfish are plentiful at any time of the year.

What is Different About Fly Fishing in Flats?
Fly fishing saltwater flats is unlike any freshwater experience. Here, everything is visual game. The shallow, crystal clear waters of our Texas bays enable you to spot your prey from as much as 100 feet away. Nothing is sweeter than watching a tailing redfish and then quietly stalking him until he moves within casting range. Our clients love the challenge of saltwater flats; a surprising number of our clients are actually freshwater fishing guides looking for warmer days and a test of skill during their offseason.
Unlike other fisheries, the water in our bays allow redfish to see us coming from far distances. Anglers must be able to cast 30 to 40 feet with minimal false casts, often times doing so into marginal winds. Casting accuracy is vital with these fish, so to give yourself a high number of quality looks at fish, you’ll need to possess the ability to cast 40 feet in the wind using a longer leader and a heavy fly. Those who can put it all together with accuracy and minimal false casts, have many great looks at redfish. It sounds tough, but don’t let us talk you out of it!
Flats fishing is a challenging fly fishing experience, but it’s not just for the pros. Our Port O’Connor fishing guides instruct anglers of all experience levels about the intricacies of fishing the flats. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a novice saltwater angler, our guides will help you get plenty of quality looks at redfish, and novice anglers will take home far superior knowledge and technique when it comes to fishing the flats.
