Located just 8 miles from our Rockport headquarters, Aransas Pass is home to many of our favorite launch spots that access the many nearby intercoastal waters. Opportunities for everything from paddling the Lighthouse Trails looking for tailing fish, to poling along one of the pristine flats can be found in Aransas Pass for someone seeking an exciting fly fishing experience.

Many of these adventures can be accessed from marinas centrally located in the town of Aransas Pass. A short boat ride through the saltwater fishery provides an angler with endless options. This area fishes very well all year, with opportunities for redfish, black drum, flounder, speckled trout (sea trout, specs), and sheepshead. For those fishing during the warmer months, there is the potential for you to encounter jack crevalle (jacks), cobia, kingfish, or even a rolling tarpon in nearby waters.

What’s Unique About Saltwater Flats Fishing?

The crystal clear, shallow waters surrounding Aransas Pass make it the ideal location for sight fishing the saltwater flats. The challenge associated with this type of angling, deems it an ultimate fly fishing experience for most avid fly fisherman. Anglers can see the fish, before even making a cast and are able to observe the fish reacting to the cast, and hopefully the fly. Many liken this experience to hunting; silently stalking the flats in search of the prey, in this case one of the many spooky redfish.

These waters hold a large number of fish, as well as some of the toughest redfish around. Due to the crystal clear waters, the fish can see everything around them and have excellent vision. An angler needs to be able to accurately cast 30-40 feet consistently, with the wind generally present.

An angler that can ACCURATELY deliver a 40 foot cast into the wind, utilizing minimal false casts, a long leader, and a weighted fly, will have many quality opportunity at fish. But, this doesn’t mean that this type of fishing is only for experts. Patient and proficient guides are well suited to take any level of saltwater angler including beginner and novice. Overall success rates may not be that of a more experienced angler, but by the time an angler’s day fishing Aransas Pass is complete, they will have had quality opportunities at fish, and refined their skills!

With most trips leaving from one of the conveniently located marinas, your day fly fishing Aransas Pass will typically begin in the morning. Your Captain/Guide will carefully consider current weather, tides, and fishing conditions and will have relayed your meeting place to you in the day(s) prior to your trip. Your fishing guide generally determines the starting time, but he will be more than happy to work with you to meet your scheduling needs; please don’t hesitate to communicate those to him. The Captain/Guide will already have his poling skiff or boat in the water and will be ready to greet you and start your day.

Your Aransas Pass guide is happy to provide all of the necessary gear that an angler may need. Quality rods, reels, flies, and terminal tackle are all carefully considered to match the fishing conditions. Of course, anglers are more than welcome to bring any of their own gear that they would like to use and the Aransas Pass guide will help set up your rod with the necessary leaders, tippet, and fly de jure. A cooler filled with ice and water will also be on board, and those wishing to bring any other food or drink for the duration of their trip are welcome to do so. Alcoholic beverages are allowed but you MUST provide your own.

Fly Fish Rockport endeavors to provide the best experience possible to every angler choosing to fly fish Aransas Pass. Eight to nine hours of fishing for each full day trip, and four to five hours for each half day trip is what a client should expect, although inclement weather or hazardous conditions can impact this.
