Venturing Angler Guide Profile and Interview

Was fortunate enough to work with the crew over at The Venturing Angler on a little interview and guide profile about First Cast Outfitters. They did a great job with everything and included a handful of photos as well. You can check out the entire interview on the Venturing Angler site here: http://venturingangler.com/2015/04/28/fly-fishing-guide-profile-jeff-johnson-of-first-cast-outfitters/ ---

Rainy Days on the Flats

Rainy days on the flats of Rockport, Texas Would someone please tell the weatherman that winter is over! We should be basking in far more sunny days this far along in April than we are. Instead, it still feels like February/March out there. Dark, rainy days have still been the norm as of late. This has been making fishing a bit tougher than we would like, but not completely unfortunate. There are fish to be had... IF you can see them. But a change in the weather would certainly be welcome. Other than that, fly fishing in Rockport, Texas has been steady. You just have to think a

Pick and Choose Your Battles

If you see a window of opportunity, TAKE IT!!! You got to love Spring weather patterns. Good one day, scary the next. Kind of the norm for the past/next couple of weeks. But all that aside, it is fishing just fine. You just need to pick and choose your battles. If you see a good weather day, you better take advantage of it this time of year. Because then next four days might just be scary out there. Let's hope that this trend burns off sooner than later and we can look forward to those comfortable, sunny days of early summer soon. ---

Early April Fishing Report – Rockport, TX

Slot red near Rockport, TX It appears that Spring has finally decided to stick around a little while. Temps in the upper 70's to low 80's have become the norm... finally. We certainly appreciate it. And I know the fish do as well. We are starting to see even better numbers of fish on the flats in the greater Rockport area. Great numbers of reds, trout, drum and sheephead are around and eating flies well. With the warmer days/nights being the norm, our water temps are climbing up and making the fish a bit happier. This means we are finding fish a little more willing to eat a

Under Armour Fishing

A grip of new clothing and accessories showed up in the mail today! As of last week, I was officially invited to join the Under Armour Fishing team. Their fishing apparel is killer and I am super pumped to be representing them on the water. I will be rocking their gear every day, providing feedback and encouraging the design of exceptional fly fishing apparel from them in the future. And I may or may not have weaseled my way into some new golfing gear as well. If you are looking for some new gear, that actually comes in colors, instead of the usual greens and browns of other fishing brands,

Early March Fishing Report

Brrrr! Its freezing out here The weather as of late has been... interesting, to say the least. Apparently winter isn't quite finished with us yet. It's been cold, cloudy, rainy, foggy and blowing like hell out of the North. Any one of those will wreck a day of fishing. But all of them together, consistently, is just not fair. This has surely been the roughest patch of weather all winter for us. A typical day or two of junk, then some nice days is the usual. This is just hanging around for upwards of a week at a time. Unfortunately this weather was here for all of Brian's

Mid February Fishing Report

Love the blue in a redfish tail. Nice shot here on the release While the Northeast continues to dig themselves out after yet another winter storm, we were back on the water today. The Texas Coast didn't completely avoid the weather though. We had a couple of days of very high winds, rain, clouds and cooler temps. But after clearing a little ice off the skiff this morning, we were ready to enjoy the upper 60's and calm day today. Fishing today was about what I expected. Coming off of two cooler days, there weren't an abundance of fish in shallow on the flats. There were targets, but

Early February Report

Nice red caught near Port Aransas The days continue to get warmer and warmer... for the most part. Sunny days are a bit more of the norm now, with some light prevailing winds. Excellent fishing weather. The past few days have been very good for trout in the morning, then good redfishing throughout the day. We are seeing the occasional tailing fish, but mostly fish that are cruising and laying up shallow to warm up. Most fish are cooperative or at least interested in a good cast. Especially those in less than a foot of water. But there are plenty of shots to be had each day. Fishing

Warm Days Means Better Fishing

A nice 3 spot specimen. He only had 2 on his other side. We finally have strung a few nicer days together as of late. Today's high temps reaching the low to mid 80's, depending on where you were. After a few nice days in a row, the fish seem to be taking notice. We found a real good number of fish in shallow today. Also, more really nice fish than I had been seeing as of late. Some nice fish were schooled up and cruising the flats very near some soft mud. But even better, we found some of the largest fish tails up on the flats

A Change in the Weather

Slot red near Rockport, TX After a pretty rough December and early January, mother nature finally decided to cooperate a little bit. The past week has given us favorable/damn near perfect days to be out on the water. We're talking 70's, clear and dead calm... PERFECT! It was a far cry from previous weeks. And to have three or four days like this in a row, well deserved. So we took full advantage and got out every day. A couple morning proved to be a little tricky. Many of the larger reds we found shallow were a little finicky. We had a bunch of follows to
