It is the first weekend of March, and time for the first Rockport Fishing Report of the month. So far, the new month is not starting out so hot. So here comes a rather soggy Rockport fishing report for the weekend…
So February is now long gone. Although we are missing the weather a little bit already. The month ended up being pretty solid. We were on the water well over 20 days last month. That’s not too shabby for “Winter”. Unfortunately, the first few days of March have been a little tougher. We are in the middle of a pretty solid storm blowing through as this Rockport fishing report is being written. We are expecting well over an inch of rain tonight, and I’m pretty sure the lawn furniture just blew down the street. A good night to stay in for sure. But it looks like this will be fairly short lived. Tomorrow is a new day, and the upturn after this couple days of crappy weather.
The fishing has been very good. At least before this mess. We were able to get out Thursday, despite an East wind blowing to 20+. But finding fish wasn’t hard at all. They were still cruising all the back water lakes we were in, and were plenty happy to eat.
The water temps are perfect right now. A little ahead of our usual schedule, but perfect. That makes for a bunch of happy fish out there. Also, our water levels continue to return to normal. So there is now plenty of water to fish pretty much anywhere you want. Kinda nice getting back into a few lakes we have avoided for the past month or so. And we are seeing plenty of fish back there as well.
We are still having no problem at all getting fish to eat crab patterns. But a few have been taken on shrimp or baitfish patterns. But really, we haven’t had to change flies much. Stick with whats working… they say. But expect there to be a lot more top-water opportunity in the near future, with things warming up a bit more. Always a good time.
We are on the water every day for the next week, weather allowing. Then the Fly Fish Rockport crew will rally North to the Fly Fishing Brew Fest the weekend of March 11 & 12 in Dallas. We will be hanging out in a booth all day talking to folks, giving away swag and “sampling” craft beers. So if you are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, come by and say hello. Maybe we will send you away with a bunch of free stuff. Or at least a beer!
We will also be back up in Dallas/Fort Worth again in early April. Fly Fish Rockport and Capt. Jeff will be the featured speaker for the April meeting of the Fort Worth Fly Fishers. Again, for those in the area, come by and say hello. There will certainly be plenty of fun to be had, and probably some more swag given away as well.
We will keep you informed and keep the Rockport fishing report up to date this coming week, as the stormy weather subsides. And of course folks can always follow along on Instagram or Facebook for the very latest news. We try to post something most every day there. Or of course you can email any time for additional info or ask about what we did that day.
Spring fishing is upon us! So if you are interested in getting out on the water, contact us soon so you can secure your dates on the calendar.
