After slacking a little bit, here is an updated Rockport fishing report for mid March. We apologize for the delay, but things have been a bit hectic around here. So we are finally back to normal and able to update you on the Rockport fly fishing conditions we are seeing currently.
Last week was a little tougher. We had less than perfect weather. Mainly a mixture of clouds, wind and a little bit of rain. On top of that, the water levels came up a good bit early in the week as well after a couple of storms. So this made for a couple of tricky days out there. We were still able to get out every day last week, but a few were a little on the tougher side. Fish were caught each day, but we would’ve liked to see a few more out there.
On Friday, we loaded up the trucks and headed North to Dallas/Fort Worth for the Texas Fly Fishing Brew Festival. We had a booth up there and visited with folks from that area, and all over the place. Lots of fun up there and it was good to see a few friends from other participating companies. There will be some pretty cool new to follow from this show as well. But we will get to that another day fairly soon.
After the show, we rushed back home to Rockport to get back on the water. Mondays weather was so so, but fished ok in the afternoon. Today, we were finally blessed with a full day of sunshine. It had been a while! Blazing sun, low winds and a bunch of hungry fish greeted us on the flats today… FINALLY!
The cooler mornings have had us finding our most active fish deep in lakes and marshes. Anywhere the water may be a bit warmer. But you need to watch out for some that are off color, due to the recent rain from the weekend storms. But if you can find clean water, the fish have been moving around plenty, even with the cooler mornings. As the day warmed up today, we found fish pretty much everywhere. Many were swimming around in pairs, actively looking for food, with their faces down in the mud.
Today saw one baitfish pattern being eaten early by a lone cruiser. Shortly after, another perfectly placed cast was followed and then disregarded. From then on, a dark colored crab stayed on the rod. Fish had no problem eating a well placed fly for us the remainder of our day. So we didn’t bother changing it.
The weather is looking like it will remain stable for the next couple of weeks. This should make for some outstanding fishing, as the water warms back up after the recent storms. We would expect there to be plenty of fish to be had in all the bays from Matagorda to Baffin. We have boats out every day for the remainder of this month. So we will keep the Rockport fishing reports coming. And of course folks can always follow along on Instagram, Facebook and even Snapchat for the very latest news. We try to post something most every day there. Or of course you can email any time for additional info or ask about what we did that day.
Spring fishing is upon us! So if you are interested in getting out on the water, contact us soon so you can secure your dates on the calendar.
