Welcome to your last Rockport fishing report for February! It certainly feels like Spring around here. So this new Rockport fishing report will reflect that as well.
Fishing this past week was outstanding. One of those, “You shoulda been here last week” kind of deals for sure. It really was that good. As cheesy as it is to say that kind of thing… It truly was that good out there!
The week started with Tuesday being the first day after a front blew threw. It blew 25-30 from the North all day, but was sunny. Phil (pictured above), was celebrating his birthday. So we were willing to go out and give it hell. Luckily for us, it was completely insane fishing that day. We had schools of fish running the banks all day, despite the wind. On top of that, fish tailing, cruising and pretty much eating anything in front of them. Truly a great day on the water, if you could get out of a hellaciuos wind.
The rest of the week was great as well. Mostly calm winds, temps in the 80’s and tons of happy fish. Not as many schools as the week went on, but plenrty of fish moving around. Our mornings and afternoons were best, with slack tides mid-day. But there were still fish throughout. So there were plenty of shots to be had all day long.
This weekend has brought a little change in the weather. Today we were greeted by a vicious East wind. We did what we could early today, but eventually got blown off with gusts in the mid 30’s out there. Hard to hide from winds ripping dead east. So a late lunch and beers seemed to be a better program for us today. Tomorrow appears to be a bit better. Winds will be back to the South East, and manageable. So hopefully we can get a full day in tomorrow.
This week the fish were all over the crab patterns. There wasn’t a close second for flies at all… by a mile. The crab was it. In the grass, in the sand, in the mud, or wherever else. It was far and away our best. We did get a bunch of water back in the bays this week. So the fish, and us, are able to get back into the lakes and creeks for the first time in a while. So they are looking hard for crustaceans crawling around all the shell in those spots. Dark patterns are still our best. Lots of weight to get them down quick as well.
The coming week is looking pretty solid for Rockport fly fishing. After this front blows through tomorrow or the next day, you should expect the fish to respond well. I would hope to see a lot of hungry fish following this weather moving out. The weather is consistently in the 80 degree range these days. This means our water has warmed up as well. Its hovering right around 70 degrees, which is perfect for the fish. They are hungry, active and fighting like crazy when hooked. As the water continues to warm, we would expect the baitfish to really start to pop. This will mean outstanding topwater fishing for the weeks to come.
Lots of stuff going on around here the next few weeks! Southwest Fly Fishing Magazine will be in town to do an article. The Fly Fishing Journal will be as well. And for those in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, we will have a booth at the Fly Fishing Brew Fest in early March. Come by and say hello. We will be giving away a ton of free stuff, and even a free guide trip as well.
We will keep you informed and keep the Rockport fishing report up to date this coming week. And of course folks can always follow along on Instagram or Facebook for the very latest news. We try to post something most every day there. Or of course you can email any time for additional info or ask about what we did that day.
There are still some March dates available to fish. And again, Spring and early Summer dates have been filling up very quickly. So if you are interested in getting out on the water, contact us soon so you can secure your dates on the calendar.
