After slacking for most of the holidays, we are finally getting around to updating our Rockport fishing report. Nothing like ushering in the new year, with a little current information on what we are seeing out there as of late. So here is your first Rockport fishing report of 2017!
The fishing has been very good. The weather, maybe not as much. So we are having you kind of pick and choose our days over the past two weeks. But when the weather cooperated, the fishing was very good. We managed to get out at least 4 days each week the past couple of weeks, despite a little funky weather conditions. We just needed to be a little flexible in our planning.
As we move into January now, it looks like we have some nice days coming. Today was very calm and bright enough to see a ton of fish. Tails are still easily found most every day. This is also helping during some of the darker periods during the day. But even with the occasional cloud cover, we are getting plenty of shots at fish, and often boating well into the double digits.
The redfish have been feeding well and active in a variety of water. Baitfish patterns have been working well when fishing over grass. While we are favoring dark crab patterns when fishing a little more exposed sand and mud bottom. The topwater bite has been pretty good as well. Chartreuse, white and tan have been working very well.
We also did a drum trip last week down in Baffin. It took some creative maneuvering to dodge all the duck hunters, but the fish were there. Plenty of shots at big drum, as well as a bunch of reds cruising very shallow chasing bait. Didn’t see any real large trout laying up, but they should be getting on that program soon. We will be back down there this week and will report back on Baffin Bay fly fishing specifically then.
Looking like a pretty good run of warm days early this week. So we expect the fishing to remain very good. The water level is back up a good bit after our last storm, so there will be a lot of fish pushed back deep into the lakes and marshes. Fun stuff.
We will report back later this week, as we are on the water every day. We will try to update our Rockport fishing report again before the coming weekend. Here’s to good weather and a few good fish!
