Spring is officially here, for the first Rockport fishing report of April. This means consistently warmer days, warmer nights, warmer water and completely random weather! Wind, fog, mist, rain, more wind, sun, dead calm, etc. And just about the time you go to bed thinking you know what the weather will bring the next day, you wake up and its something completely different. Or maybe the report for the morning is fine, but that fog doesn’t burn off until noon, instead of 9am like you thought. Random!
But with all that said, we have still been on the water catching fish. There certainly have been mornings where we need a tail or big push to find them at all. But we are still finding them. And when the sun does burn through, it has been very good.
Seeing lots of tail most mornings. Some singles, some small schools and the occasional larger school of 20 or more fish. As the sun gets higher, there are plenty of fish cruising the flats, working in schools and crashing baitfish on the banks. Most days, getting them to eat is not the problem at all. Although a few days with a low pressure moving in made for some snotty fish. But most are more than willing to eat.
Still liking our results with small crab patterns. Dark colors still doing the best. A few baitfish patterns have worked just fine as well. As soon as we are seeing fish blow up on bait either on the banks or randomly on the flat, we are going straight to the topwater stuff. If they are actively feeding, they have been eating it… well! Gurgler type stuff has been my go to. And the smaller stuff has been best. Colors have been all over the board. But size seemed to matter most.
On another side note… we’ve had some success looking for jacks, kings and maybe even a cobia lately. The water temps are right and these fish are starting to move around in areas where we can get at them with the fly rod. Stay tuned for a more detailed Jack Crevalle report in the next couple of days… complete with images.
Look for this weather to stabilize more and more as we continue on. We’ll get these little quick fronts out of here for a bit and maybe even a little less wind??? But fishing is good.
