Welcome to your first Rockport fishing report for March! And it is certainly looking as though Spring is here and here to stay. This means better and better Rockport fishing reports from here on out. Perfect!
We have continued to have very nice weather, for the most part. Temps have been great. Just this pesky wind keeps hanging around every day. Not enough to shut us down usually, but certainly enough to be annoying and make some of the shots at fish a bit tougher. Doable, but tougher. But with the sun shining and water temps warming nicely, its all good on the Texas flats these days.
We are starting to see fish tailing consistently each morning we are out… in the right water. But it doesn’t last long. Once the sun gets up a bit higher, they tend to change their routine. But mornings have provided some fun shots at tailing fish. We have even gotten a handful on a topwater fly lately.
Starting to see tons of small crab wandering around many of our flats. Apparently the fish are seeing them too, because they have had no problems picking up a well presented crab pattern at all. Dark colors and a bit smaller have been our best most days.
Water levels and tides are creeping back up. So fish are pushing further and further back, which is fun. Lots of fish to be found in creeks, back lakes and marshes when we are fishing up North near Seadrift or Port O’Connor. Always fun to find these guys crashing bait deep in a tidal lake.
Expect fishing to continue to get better and better each day as the water continues to warm up. Hopefully this trend will stick and we can put winter completely behind us for the year. March and April have been booking very quickly with all the nicer weather. So if you would like to get out and Fly Fish Rockport, or the surrounding waters, contact us and we can get on the water!
