Fly Fishing Port O'Connor

Cool shot with the sun setting on San Antonio Bay.

Welcome to your mid-February Rockport Fly Fishing Report.

Overall, the fishing has been pretty darn good. We have had consistently warmer weather as of late. This has made the fish a lot happier, especially earlier in the day. We’ve even had a few mornings this week where our best fishing was before 10am. Fish are out and cruising the flats earlier, crashing baitfish in the grass and even tailing a lot more frequently now. We aren’t completely in the clear from potential winter weather just yet, but this certainly is looking like the upswing.

We have also been getting a few more windy days as well. Not a deal breaker by any stretch, but it can be a bit annoying out there in 15-20 mph winds. We’ve been hiding the best we can and making it work. Most mornings it is blowing much less and we can really get after it in any water. But with clear skies and crystal clear water, the wind isn’t much more than an annoyance.

The past few days we have had some of our lowest water of the year. This had made a few areas a bunch of fun to search for reds. Most are still there, only now they are pushing water, finning or showing you their tails much more often. On the other hand, other areas are hard to get into or even unacceptable. Seeing and hearing lots of boats pushing a bunch of mud around. But with the upcoming tides and continuing S/SW breezes, we should be back to normal pretty quick.

But until then, tailing fish are very common every day. Even better, the topwater bite has been pretty good. We’ve had fairly decent success with topwater flies for reds that are cruising shallow or tailing. If you haven’t seen a red try to eat something off the surface, it’s quite a site. Sometime comical. But a ton of fun.

Weather for the foreseeable future is looking very good. I have just a few more open days as we close out the month of February. And March dates have been requested almost daily. So if you would like to get out and Fly Fish Rockport, or the surrounding waters, contact us and we can get on the water before the end of the month!
