While the Northeast continues to dig themselves out after yet another winter storm, we were back on the water today. The Texas Coast didn’t completely avoid the weather though. We had a couple of days of very high winds, rain, clouds and cooler temps. But after clearing a little ice off the skiff this morning, we were ready to enjoy the upper 60’s and calm day today.
Fishing today was about what I expected. Coming off of two cooler days, there weren’t an abundance of fish in shallow on the flats. There were targets, but not nearly as many as we were seeing last week during the warm weather. But patience paid off today. If you were willing to be patient, not blind cast and trust it, some fish were in shallow soaking up some sun. Most of the larger fish were cruising the mud bottoms solo. While we found quite a few schools of 5-10 smaller fish cruising as well.
The good news… all these fish were hungry! We had very little trouble getting a good cast eaten. And even some of the fish that we spooked with our presentation, would come right back to the shallow water within a minute of leaving. They were hungry and ready to eat. Kind of a nice change, as they have been a little finicky lately. But this enabled us to boat 7-8 of the smaller guys seen above, as well as a couple of fish in the upper 20″ range. Not bad for a morning that had ice in the boat.
The weather looks to be returning to normal now. Warmer days/nights will heat the water back up a little. This will bring more fish in shallow and really get the trout going. Hopefully after a few more nice days, we will be throwing topwater flies for trout again. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming week.
