Experience Baffin Bay Fly Fishing with Fly Fish Rockport

Fishing Baffin Bay Texas

Baffin Bay is a moderately sized bay and an inlet of the much larger Laguna Madre. Anglers fly fishing Baffin Bay will take a short boat ride South of Corpus Christi, Texas along the Upper Laguna Madre. Baffin Bay is made up of three smaller branches and has very little incoming fresh water. This high salinity creates the perfect habitat for a very unique ecosystem of food for our saltwater targets.

Baffin Bay is well known as THE place to catch large speckled trout (sea trout). Most of the Texas state record trout have been caught from this very bay. Winter and early spring are “prime time” for those seeking a trophy trout. Although these fish, as well as redfish and drum, can be caught throughout the year.

Baffin Bay is also well known for the very unique “worm rocks” that are found here. These serpulid worm rocks form columns under the water. These provide excellent habitat for our fish. And can drive boat operators’ nuts at the same time. So we highly recommend one of our experienced Baffin Bay fishing guides that know this water well.

While fly fishing in Baffin Bay, you will have access to numerous saltwater flats that can provide distinctive opportunities at tailing or cruising redfish, a large black drum that can frequently be seen cruising the shallow waters of this bay, or, of course, the chance at the speckled trout of a lifetime.

Regardless of the opportunity you are seeking, Fly Fish Rockport’s goal is to provide the best Baffin Bay fly fishing experience possible.

Baffin Bay Flats Fishing

How Saltwater Fishing is Unique

Avid fly fisherman from across the globe consider a saltwater flat the ultimate challenge for fly fishing. The pristine, shallow water of the Texas flats provides an angler the unique window into the underwater world of the redfish. You will be able to spot the fish before casting to it, and then you can watch the fish react. Hopefully, your cast will be on target; these fish are known to consistently take a well-placed fly! Then prepare for a great fight as these fish are feisty and strong. This type of fishing is frequently compared to hunting; quietly stalking the crystal clear flats searching for spooky prey. In our case, that will be one of our numerous Texas redfish.

The clarity of the water provides the angler a unique opportunity to see the fish, but this increases the challenge as well, because the fish are able to watch everything that happens around them. These Texas redfish are some of the toughest around and angler must be prepared to cast 30-40 feet reliably, using the least amount of false casts possible. The winds are frequently marginal, and accuracy is paramount. So, the angler that consistently and accurately casts 40 feet in wind, with a weighted fly and a long leader, will find themselves with many quality opportunities at fish.

It’s important to note, however that any level of angler will have a great time fly fishing Baffin Bay. The Baffin Bay guides frequently take out novice and beginner saltwater anglers, and although the overall number of landed fish may be less than an angler with more experience, all anglers will have quality chances at many fish, and will leave with a great deal more skill on the saltwater.
